After two years of extremely interesting programs exclusively by composers and arrangers from the region, this year the BIG BAND WEST is devoting itself to the music of Thad Jones, Mel Lewis and Count Basie.
"We launched a survey among the musicians in the big band to find out which style should define the program for 2025. The result was clear - the music of these three jazz greats! Many consider it to be the heyday of the big band era," explains Elmar Berger, who has led the band since 2015.
The BIG BAND WEST, consisting of musicians from Deutschlandsberg and the whole of Western Styria, was first founded in 1988 by music school director Prof. Josef Rupp. In 1998, trombonist Hansjörg Arndt took over the direction and in 2015 Elmar Berger.
