Styrian Summer Art: Wood sculpture workshop
About the offer
The art of creating sculptures from leftover materials such as wood, panel materials, or acrylic glass is the theme of this workshop. Every year, large quantities of materials are discarded or burned. The workshop aims to raise awareness that these supposed waste materials can be exciting and valuable raw materials for artworks.
Both artistic and craft aspects are central: As a participant, you will learn to consciously perceive shapes and volumes in order to develop and implement your own ideas. At the beginning, there will be an introduction to the safe use of tools such as saws, chisels, and cordless screwdrivers. However, minimal use of machinery will be emphasized, so that you can continue to work independently and creatively after the workshop.
Whether you want to create an abstract sculpture, make a usable object, or simply explore various materials and techniques and their combinations – the workshop provides space for your creative ideas and imaginative creations. In addition to a wide selection of materials, inspiring resources from art and craft will also be available to train the artistic and craft sense.
The goal of the workshop is to combine art and sustainability, to open new perspectives on materials, and to unleash your creativity freely.
This workshop is held in collaboration with the
SAMA-Kollektiv, curated by Susanna Katter.

Simon Reitmann was born in 1999 in Rottenmann, Stmk/Ö, and grew up in Upper Austria. After completing the master school for sculpture at the Ortweinschule Graz, he is currently studying sculpture and transmedia space in the class of Tobias Urban and Ali Janka (Gelitin) at the University of Art Linz and TransArts - Transdisciplinary Art at the University of Applied Arts Vienna.
In 2021, he received one of four Ortwein scholarships from the state of Styria with an exhibition at the Museum of History in Graz. His works are part of various collections, including the Art Collection Upper Austria and the collection of the Styrian provincial government – Neue Galerie Graz.
Clear lines and shapes characterize his works just as strongly as the desire to depict them in motion. Reitmann engages with various materials in his work and utilizes their respective properties. He draws inspiration from everyday life, where he mentally picks up, disassembles, and reassembles everything. Graphically appealing elements also find their way into his works repeatedly.
