Multifaceted historical site and second largest castle in Styria
Above the town of Rottenmann in the Paltental, yet located within the municipality of Lassing, the name Strechau is mentioned for the first time in 1074. The partially Romanesque, partially Gothic fortification was transformed into a Renaissance castle by the Hoffmann family, leaders of the Styrian Protestant estates, in the middle of the 16th century. The Italian-looking courtyard and the mannerist ceiling painting (1579) of the workspace impressively attest to this.
Since 2006, the castle has been open to the public, also featuring an exhibition of a collection of vintage cars from the Steyr brand. The exhibition offers a complete overview of the automobile production of Steyr from 1920 to 1941. Contrary to usual museum practice, which often aims to present exhibits as 'decommissioned' without any operational fluids, fuel, etc., the vehicles on display are operational and are used multiple times a year!
