...a long mining tradition.
Originally, it was the last shift before Christmas, before the comrades could escape for a short time from the dangers of the underground tunnels. Today, this last shift is still celebrated, even though there hasn't been any underground mining for several decades.
In its current form, the Mettenschicht has been held in Eisenerz since 1984 – at that time, mining official Anton Manfreda revived this tradition.
The organization of the Mettenschicht has been entrusted to the Montanhistorische Verein Österreich (MHVÖ) and the Knappschaftsverein Eisenerz-Radmer-Vordernberg since 1984.
With the old mining crew train, "the Katl", people travel into the Franz Stollen and proceed to the Barbaranische, where a holy mass is held with music and singing.
