St. Xaver Stadtpfarrkirche in Leoben
LeobenBaroque jewel in the heart of Leoben.
The parish church of St. Xaver in Leoben impresses with its baroque splendour, rich history and cultural significance.
The imposing parish church of St. Xavier has characterised the townscape of Leoben for over 300 years. Built between 1660 and 1665, the building reflects the masterful work of architect Peter Franz Carlone, an outstanding representative of the famous baroque master builder dynasty. The exterior façade bears witness to the Renaissance style, while the splendid interior represents the so-called ‘Jesuit Baroque’. The richly decorated high altar and the 17th century pulpit, which were donated by Salzburg Archbishop Maximilian Gandolph von Khünburg, are particularly impressive. The central altarpiece shows the apotheosis of the church's patron saint, St Francis Xavier, and is flanked by skilfully crafted statues.
In addition to its artistic beauty, the church has an eventful history. Originally built as a Jesuit church, it was initially hardly used after the order was abolished in 1773. It was not until 1811 that it was officially named the town's parish church, replacing St James' Church on the outskirts.
Another highlight is the organ, which was renovated in 2008/09 and now fulfils both liturgical requirements and concert performances.
