Heimatmuseum "Troadkastn"
Mautern in der SteiermarkIn the Troadkastn, which today houses a local museum, taxes were stored in the form of wheat, oats, and grain. Today, among other things, reconstructed copper smelting furnaces from the Urnfield period can be seen there.
The Urnfield period (between 1200 and 750 BC) derives its name from the practice of cremating the dead in clothing and with grave goods on a pyre, with the ashes deposited in a clay vessel.
Due to the construction of the Pyhrn Autobahn, extensive preliminary investigations of archaeological sites were initiated by the Federal Monuments Office in 1988. An amateur mineralogist from Mautern discovered slag in the area of Schloss Ehrnau, which was analyzed at the Montan University in Leoben. This allowed for the discovery and excavation of this prehistoric copper smelting facility measuring 20 x 15m.
